Garden of Goldfish

Goldfish -- Lynn Zuk-Lloyd

In the summer between fourth and fifth grade, my son changed the water for his goldfish named Finey. This was something he had been doing for a several months. A little while later the goldfish was listing at the top of the bowl. Finey had changed color and the darker color didn’t look healthy. We thought that my son may have forgotten to add the drops that takes chlorine out of the tap water, so we added more drops. The 2-inch goldfish still looked like it was in bad shape. My son knew his fish was dying and was really upset.

I didn’t know what to do and wondered if prayer could help. I suggested we pray and my son and I went upstairs, away from the fish, because looking at Finey was too upsetting for both of us. We knelt by my bed and asked God to heal Finey. I felt led to ask my son to picture himself placing Finey into Jesus’ capable Hands and then watch what Jesus did. In his mind, he saw Jesus take his tiny goldfish and place it into the Father’s Hands. At that point, he stopped crying, smiled and went to the family room to finish watching the Flintstones movie. That’s when I let my tears fall. I didn’t have enough faith to really believe that God could heal a goldfish and thought the fish was probably dead because my son saw Jesus place the fish in the Father’s Hands.

So I called my friend, Pearl, an elderly woman in her 80’s, who prays for her cat and other animals and God heals them. I told her about the fish, my lack of faith and that my son and I prayed for the fish. She assured me that God cares for all creatures and that He heard our prayer. She said she was just about to eat her lunch and needed to eat right then or else get too shaky, but she would pray for my son’s goldfish after she ate. I went downstairs to check on the fish. It was still listing at the top of the bowl but the color looked better and it moved a little more. I went back to housecleaning.

An hour later, I checked on the fish and it was swimming around the bowl all happy and excited! Pearl must have prayed and God answered her prayers. Well, that fish swam round and round and up and down the fish bowl for three days. I never saw such an excited fish. Finey outgrew the fish bowl and we bought a 10-gallon tank where it lived for almost 10 years – a long life span time for a goldfish.
